Calder / Kelly
An exhibition of works by these two (now) world-renowned artists, Alexander Calder and Ellsworth Kelly at Lévy Gorvy in New York, on view from November 9th - January 9th, 2019.
However, when Kelly first met Calder in Paris he was 25 years old younger than the established Alexander Calder, and the two became unlikely friends.
"Calder was known to have helped Kelly professionally, reaching out to influential curators and even going so far as to pay his studio rent for a month – a gesture he never extended to any other artist." - Wallpaper
This exhibition “celebrates the artists’ friendship and their extraordinary experiences as Americans who were shaped by significant periods of time spent living in Paris.” - Lévy Gorvy Press Release
“The beauty of the friendship is the kinship of two different generations going at these very, very strong principles in a complete different way,” Lévy says. “In a complete freedom but embracing each other’s vision, really.”
Dominique Lévy talking through the exhibit (below).
“Why must art be static? You look at an abstraction, sculptured or painted, an entirely exciting arrangement of planes, spheres, nuclei, entirely without meaning. It would be perfect but it is always still. The next step in sculpture is motion.” Alexander Calder
“I'm interested in the space between the viewer and the surface of the painting - the forms and the way they work in their surroundings. I'm interested in how they react to a room.” - Ellsworth Kelly
