I'm crying because you're not crying
Claire Tabouret had her first solo exhibition at Almine Rech’s Paris location, which is just around the corner from fellow famous galleries such as Galerie Perrotin and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac. The exhibition is titled - ‘I’m crying because you’re not crying,’ and ran from Sep 8th until Oct 6th, 2018.
Perhaps the most powerful theme of this exhibition is Claire’s “acute awareness of how difficult it is to end the hostilities and conflicts between human beings other than through artistic representation” - Almine Rech’s Press Release
Claire’s paintings of wrestlers represent a relatable example of the contradictory behavior humans can exhibit in the form of athletes gripping one another with either violence and strength, or emotional struggle and support
In “I am crying because you are not crying” - Claire references many historical works such as:
Michaelangelo’s - Two Wrestlers
Bas Jan Ader’s - ‘I’m too sad to tell you’
About the Artist
While Claire was born in France, she currently lives in Los Angeles, California. I initially came across her works through Night Gallery at The Armory Show in 2017 and was instantly taken by her ‘Gas Mask Paintings.’
Being born in France she’s been quoted to have taken inspiration from the impressionists movement - which can be seen in the figurative portraits she’s known for.
About the Gallery
Typical of most (prestigious) galleries in Paris - Almine Rech is tucked away in a courtyard paved with cobblestone and sheltered by vaulted ceilings.
Almine Rech has other locations in Brussels, London, New York, and represents some of the most famous artists from art history such as Pablo Picasso (himself), Genieve Figgis, Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Julian Schnabel, and James Turrell (and many more).
Claire is represented by Almine Rech (in Paris) and Night Gallery in Los Angeles
