In Daylight or Cool White
An exhibition by Dan Flavin at David Zwirner’s 20th street location that was on show from February 21st—April 14th, 2018.
"My icons do not raise up the blessed savior in elaborate cathedrals. They are constructed concentrations celebrating barren rooms. They bring a limited light" - Dan Flavin
Similar to the vibe of many blue chip galleries in Chelsea, when you walk into David Zwirner Gallery you can sense an almost other-worldly, omniscient presence. You may not know who the artist is or what it's about, but what you do know....it's probably expensive and rare...so never mistake blue chip for blue collar.
Ironically while this exhibition gives off powerful, heavenly vibes, Flavin uses what is widely commercially available - different types of white fluorescent lighting
Cool, Daylight, Warm White, Soft Light
This particular exhibition is extremely powerful in person...because the longer you stare at the works the more differentiations of white they eye uncovers. While Dan Flavin was known to be friends with Sol LeWitt his work has similarities to that of the slightly younger artist James Turrell (represented by Pace Gallery) and Donald Judd.
In fact, the artist uses fleuressant tubes so often in his work it’s almost impossible to see a fluorescent light fixture and not think of Dan Flavin. A true New Yorker (born and died), David Zwirner now represents his estate.
David Zwirner has many locations not only across New York, but internationally as well in London and Hong Kong, and represents some of the most famous artists of our time such as Donald Judd, Chris Ofili, Richard Serra, and Ruth Asawa.
Zwirner plays in the big leagues alongside galleries such as Gagosian and Perrotin. Think an 'Ariana Grande' of the art world in terms of fame and reputation.
The title of the exhibition “refers to Flavin’s seminal text “‘… in daylight or cool white.’ an autobiographical sketch,” first published in the December 1965 issue of Artforum.” - David Zwirner Press Release
