THAT’S NOT IT
An exhibition by Geoffrey Chadsey at Jack Shainman on view from May 17th – June 23rd, 2018.
After seeing large scale paintings, or detailed sculptures, it’s hard to be blown away by something as delicate as drawings, but oh my sweet lord I enjoyed Chadsey’s exhibition at Jack Shainman so so much.
The staff at Jack Shainman do the best job at explaining his style and subject matter:
“Chadsey continues a decade-long exploration of fantasized subjects that hover in the sfumato between the masculine and the effeminate: they are made-up “men” composed of selves presented for an unseen, image-consuming digital audience.” - Jack Shainman Press Release
Chadsey questions what 'male masculinity' means and what kind of 'mask' society asks men to wear. The layers in his work represent a 'shedding' of these layers, the expectation of society, to reveal a fragile man.
“I think my drawings pursue the indeterminacy of a delicate masculinity, a presentation of self,” he says. “These characters have yet to settle into a self they are striving to embody. There is a flutter of moving limbs, a state of undress that is about being in-between.” - Geoffrey Chadsey
