Best Life
An exhibition by Grace Weaver at James Cohan on view from September 14th - October 28th, 2018, at their East Village location.
The name pretty much says it all. This is a fun, culturally relevant exhibition that’s a good time for all. It’s the kind of exhibition you can bring your friends to that don’t know anything about art and they’ll enjoy.
“The title and subject matter nod to millennials’ rose-tinted online self-curation, tapping into the “fronting culture” facilitated by social media. That is, one’s ability to produce and maintain a façade of continually living their “best life.”” - Gallery Gurls
This reliability comes from Weaver’s subject matter - everyday scenes any woman/person can identify with such as a date, putting on makeup, making food, getting ready.
However, Grace calls out the the fact (through portraits) these ‘mundane acts’ we carry out on a regular basis (particularly as women) have become more and more public thanks to social media. Instagrams of avocado toast anyone?
“These paintings have a melancholy to them, suggesting a frustrated will to perfection.” - James Cohan Press Release
A crazier fact is that this is her first exhibition showing off her shift from oil paint to acrylic. I call this ‘crazy’ because it looks like a material she’s worked in her entire career, since she’s done such a lovely job of it.
Weaver is on the younger side of established artist...barely if not even 30 years old (and already show at James Cohan..wow!). She got her MFA at VCU in Richmond Virginia and now lives and works in New York.
