IN MEINER WOHNUNG GIBT ES VIELE ZIMMER
Gregor Hildebrandt’s exhibition at Perrotin Gallery in New York, running from November 3rd - December 22nd, 2018, showcases how art can be made from all kinds of materials not just paint and a canvas. His material of choice……
Can you tell?
Look again….
The Answer:
Outmoded analogue recording technologies—the magnetic tape of cassettes, and vinyl records
Hildebrandt has a long history with music.. and uses cassette and vinyl tapes over and over again as his medium. On these tapes are single songs, which he names the exhibition after.
For ‘In meiner wohnung gibt es viele zimmer’ - Hildebrandt wanted to create an entire environment, or a home for his artworks.
Hildebrandt is a German artist (hence the exhibition name) and currently lives and works in Berlin.
This work (above) - is one of my absolute favorites of the show. At first glance it looks like wood??
When you get close you realize, it's stacks and stacks of cassette tapes! Staying true with the analogue recording theme, Hildebrandt finds more and more ways to manipulate this material to surprise the audience.
Below is the largest room of the exhibition - featuring painted analogue recording tape. How he painted such a delicate material...I have no idea...but it's absolutely spectacular.
