Looking for amazing art to see?

The best part of an art fair is that it brings the art community together from all over the world, and since The Armory Show (and Independent) is happening in my backyard of New York City I thought I’d share my recommendations on what to see and do while you all are here.

In summary, I’d recommend visiting Chelsea between 6-8 pm on Thursday, March 8th to see openings from Gagosian, James Cohan, Paul Kasmin, Lehmann Maupin and more.

On Friday I’d focus on the east side (again between 6-8 pm) with shows at Rachel Uffner, Proxyco, and Eva Presenhuber.

Hopefully if you’re staying through the weekend you can check out some of the legendary museum shows happening right now at the New Museum and The Met Breur.

Gallery Openings (aka open after hours)

Thursday (March 7th) - Chelsea

The exhibition includes twenty-nine paintings from the past ten years (so quite the collection of works) by Chinese artist Jia Aili.

Gallery: Gagosian

Address: 522 W 21st St, New York, NY 10011

Artist: Jia Aili

Abstract paintings that connect nature (like the universe) and spirituality. Groovy

Gallery: James Cohan

Address: 533 W 26th St, New York, NY 10001

Artist: Lee Mullican

“Half-formed, simultaneously disappearing and reappearing shapes suggest that somewhere amidst the lines, there are figures tumbling, colliding, or fighting obscured by clouds of smoke.” These paintings are DOPE. A must-see.

Gallery: Kasmin

Address: 297 10th ave, New York, NY 10001

Artist: Jan-Ole Schiemann

The New York-based artist will debut a series of recent, large-scale tapestry-like oil paintings that hang entirely free from a stretcher bar. Organic.

Gallery: Lehmann Maupin

Address: 501 W 24th St, New York, NY 10011

Artist: Angel Otero

Friday (March 8th) - East Village

I’m so excited to see these paintings by Arcmanoro Niles about “that carefully observe how those around him deal with heartbreak and disappointment.” Sounds moving.

Gallery: Rachel Uffner

Address:  170 Suffolk Street New York, NY 10002

Artist: Arcmanoro Niles

This gallery is conveniently located right next door to Rachel Uffner, and they specialize in emerging and mid-career Latin American artists. This exhibition is true-to-brand with a group show of gorgeous paintings by Latin American artists.

Gallery: Proxyco

Address: 168 Suffolk St, New York, NY 10002

Artists: ISA CARRILLO, CIRCE IRASEMA, LUCÍA VIDALES

Dawson shows off two series of paintings, one of round works depicting classical planets and their respective days of the week, and two about a bird connecting with different realities. Aren’t we all. And Eva Presenhuber never fails to put on a good show, so I’m there.

Gallery: Eva Presenhuber

Address: 39 Great Jones St, New York, NY 10012

Colorful, detailed, abstract figurative paintings. Enough said.
