Love, American Style
An exhibition by Jane Fine on view from September 5th — October 7th, 2018 at Pierogi Gallery in the Lower East Side.
Inspired by the potential of a female president in the last election Fine began creating happy, childlike artworks. However, when that didn’t work out and You-Know-Who was elected, Fine started to ‘rework’ the happy paintings into something slightly more dismal.
“During the last two years, it seemed that every awful bit of news was a reminder that we had to resist distraction and follow the money. With that, the dollar sign crept up in painting after painting.” - Jane Fine
Other political events such as the white supremacist marches in Charlottesville, Virginia inspired her use of the swastika in her works.
“As a Jew, I was especially shocked to see Nazi symbolism on prominent display. I felt certain I had to re-contextualize the swastika by including it in my paintings. I wanted to mock this symbol of hate, rather than be afraid of it.” - Jane Fine (on the white supremacist marches in Charlottesville, Virginia)
The overall title of the show ‘Love, American Style’ is
“It is a reference to Trump’s scandals and to my own; it refers to a love of money, a love of art, and to the cultural life of the late 60s that formed me.” - Jane Fine
