Meet Me In the Bathroom at The Hole

It’s kind of impossible to decouple the New York East Village art scene from the music scene of the ’90s, so the exhibit ‘Meet Me in the Bathroom’ pays tribute to that unique time in New York history.

“The exhibition is a visual counterpart to Meet Me In the Bathroom, Lizzy Goodman’s best-selling book that delves into the rock-and-roll revival that emerged from New York City in the 2000s.” (source)

Lizzy Goodman, the author of Meet Me In the Bathroom and Hala Matar curated the exhibit that was on view during the month of September 2019.

The Hole is known for transforming their space to complement the work of the exhibiting artist...but for this exhibit, they took it to a new level.

“If the goal of the book, Meet Me in the Bathroom, was to transport the reader to the last era of dirty, druggy, maniacally joyful New York City, the goal of Meet Me in the Bathroom: The Art Show is to color in the sensory reality of that place. What did it feel like to be in the birthplace of the American dream as the sunset on the 20th century?” (source)

If I didn’t know any better I would have thought I was at a concert venue or a bar...especially with the fully realistic bathroom replica in the middle of the exhibit.
