New York Art Galleries - Upper East Side
Since New York has so many galleries, I’ve split my lists up by neighborhood. While these are not ALL of the galleries in this particular area, these are the galleries I go to regularly because they have an engaging program and usually put on a great exhibit.
The Upper East Side is home to a lot of secondary market galleries - aka galleries that sell artworks that have come from previous owners, and not directly from the artist’s studio. Those aren’t my particular cup of tea, so I’ve excluded a lot of them. However, it’s still worth making the trip up to the Upper East Side to see the gorgeous, more European-like exhibition spaces of galleries like Skarstedt and David Zwirner. Plus, there’s the Met.
If you get tired and need a little pick-me-up, I suggest popping into Saint Ambrous to live your best Upper East Side life.

UES Art Galleries
Almine Rech Gallery
Address: 39 E 78th St, New York, NY 10075

Anton Kern Gallery
Address: 16 East 55th Street, New York, NY 10022
Website: https://www.antonkerngallery.com/
Fun fact, Anton Kern Gallery's founder is the son of famous artist, Georg Baselitz. The gallery is slightly further south than its other UES companions, but the exhibition space is extraordinary, spanning three whole floors.
David Zwirner
Address: 34 East 69th Street, New York, NY 10021
Website: https://www.davidzwirner.com/
David Zwirner is conveniently located next door to Hauser & Wirth and Kurimanzutto. The most beautiful features of this gallery space are definitely the spiral staircase.
Franklin Parrasch Gallery
Address: 53 E 64th St, New York, NY 10065
Website: http://franklinparrasch.com/
Gagosian - 976 Madison Avenue
Address: 976 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10075
Website: https://gagosian.com/
There are almost too many gallery spaces to count in the 976 Madison Avenue gallery. The thing I love about Gagosian is he stays true to his style no matter where his gallery is. His spaces area always super simple, with the most extravagant feature being the occasional uber-shiny concrete floor.
Gagosian - 980 Madison Avenue
Address: 980 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10075
Website: https://gagosian.com/
Gagosian's 980 Madison Avenue space is located at the bottom of the 976 Madison Avenue building, with their store facing the street. If you walk through the store (have a browse while you're at it) you'll get to the gallery in the back.
Park & 75
Address: 821 Park Ave, New York, NY 10021
Website: https://gagosian.com/
Don't be fooled by the name. Park & 75 is still a Gagosian gallery...the only that doesn't go by Larry's name. This was done on purpose in order for the gallery to be an experimental space where Gagosian could show newer, emerging artists that aren't a part of his program (yet).
Hauser & Wirth
Address: 32 East 69th Street, New York, NY 10021
Website: https://www.hauserwirth.com/
While this Hauser & Wirth location is nothing compared to their LA compound, it's still pretty great and spans three floors...so you've got lots of options.
Kurimanzutto
Address: 22 East 65th Street, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10065
Website: https://www.kurimanzutto.com/
Lévy Gorvy
Address: 909 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10021
Website: https://www.levygorvy.com/
You may start to notice a pattern...Lévy Gorvy is also a three story gallery. The thing that I really appreciate about Lévy Gorvy is how they utilize their staircase. They decorate the entire staircase to include supportive quotes from the artists, or just context for the exhibit in general, so as you wander from floor to floor you learn something! Also looking at these pictures makes me really miss wearing heels...will that ever be a thing again?
Petzel Gallery
Address: 35 E 67th Street, new york, NY, 10065
Website: https://www.petzel.com/
Simon Lee Gallery
Address: 26 East 64th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10065
Website: https://www.simonleegallery.com/
Skarstedt - 64th St.
Address: 19 E 64th St, New York, NY 10065
Website: https://www.skarstedt.com/
Like Gagosian...Skarstedt has not one, but TWO upper east side locations. Both are equally beautiful, and gigantic. I've mentioned this before but the 64th street location is, in my opinion the most beautiful gallery in New York, so if you go to one gallery in this whole list, make it this one.
Skarstedt - 79th St.
Address: 20 East 79th Street, New York, NY 10075
Website: https://www.skarstedt.com/
I hope you enjoy your time on the Upper East Side. If you didn't get to see enough art at these galleries then stop by The Met.
