Bait Paintings
Richard Hawkin's art makes me happy. And according to my Instagram engagement it makes the people of the internet pretty happy too. ‘'Coming to Grips with Dick Pic Addiction’ is the painting that was my first photo to surpass 3000 likes (and I don't’ think it’s just because of the title.)
Hawkins show - Bait Paintings, on view March 8th - April 19th (2019) is his 6th solo show with Greene Naftali.
My favorite works of the exhibition are Hawkin’s ‘Lure Paintings’ which are created out of magazine cut-outs and brightly colored oil stick (who’s not a sucker for an oil stick painting - so Basquiat).
These works represent our society’s form of idol worship through things like ‘cocaine, antidepressants, leaked nudes’.
About Richard Hawkins
Hawkins is far from an emerging artist, with works in the LACMA, Art Institute of Chicago, The Whitney, and The Moma (just to name a few).
I personally am obsessed with Richard Hawkins because of his ‘haunted dollhouses.’ What a lot of people don’t know about me is I have an embarrassingly large doll collection so anything involving dollhouses is right up my alley. And his attention to detail is exquisite and captivating.
“Like the hobbyist who fastidiously attends to every detail of interior and exterior, Hawkins works obsessively on the exterior finishes and interior decorating, placing a miniature porcelain vase here, a little Chinese silk lantern there, and hanging tiny pieces of laundry to dry from tiny balconies.” - The New York Times
These dollhouses have cropped up in solo shows at Richard Telles Gallery in LA and also his retrospective at the Art Institute of Chicago.
He lives and works in Los Angeles.
He’s represented by the following galleries
Greene Naftali - New York
Galerie Buchholz - Berlin
