The Geometry of Colour
‘The Geometry of Colour’ is Robin Rhode’s fifth solo exhibition with Lehmann Maupin, taking place at their 22nd Street location in Chelsea, January 18th – March 10th, 2018.
“Coming of age among the first generation of post-apartheid South Africans, Rhode has long made it his mission to engage with the realities of poverty, crime, and violence that plague many developing and postcolonial societies.” - Lehmann Maupin Press Release
Rhode balances such heavy topics of poverty, crime and violence by portraying them in an approachable, (literally) colorful way. For example, photographing a subject in front of a colorful mural that’s been painted (by him) in a particularly gang-ridden area of Johannesburg.
Robin Rhode is a South African artist that resides in Berlin, Germany. His most well-known work are (like these) his photographs of solo individuals interacting with murals the artists “painted on public walls in Johannesburg and Berlin.” At first glance his photos look completely like paintings, grouped together to show off the dynamic movements of the individuals captured.
Some of his historical references that inspire his work include,
Sol Lewitt: minimal wall drawings
Vito Acconci and Bruce Nauman: performance art
Rhode is represented by Lehmann Maupin, New York and Hong Kong and has had 5 solo exhibitions with them since 2013.
Rhode is represented by three additional galleries globally:
- Stevenson, Cape Town and Johannesburg (South Africa)
- Studio Per L'Arte Contemporanea Tucci Russo, Torre Pellice (Italy)
- kamel mennour, Paris and London.
