About the Exhibit - In Lieu of Flowers
Shara Hughes exhibit, In Lieu of Flowers, at Rachel Uffner Gallery, was on view from May 3 – June 23, 2019.
Hughe’s works have a playful, almost childlike quality of them thanks to her use of many different types of materials such as acrylic paint, oil paint, and dye.
“I think it's hard to decide to be playful. There are so many edges you have to be on to make work playful. You have to be aware of yourself, aware of the viewer, and aware of another type of freedom from both of those participants. To be 'playful' in the work I feel like you have to let go naturally. Deciding to do that is very hard, so I feel like it just takes practice. Maybe it's more about practicing to accept your mistakes.” - Shara Hughes for Maake Magazine (source)
Hughe’s signature subject matter are landscapes, so zooming in on flowers of said landscapes was a perfect evolution.
“I’m really trying actively to surprise myself every time I make a new painting.” - Shara Hughes for Galerie Magazine (source)
“How do I make a flower painting that’s both ugly and beautiful? Flower paintings have all this stigma about them.”- Shara Hughes for Galerie Magazine(source)
