Spencer Sweeney
The more I know about Spencer Sweeney the more I understand the strange depths and variety that appear in his self portraits. He does seem to have many traits ranging from DJ, Artist, to jokester/recluse. In fact, other than his instagram account @dirtyroomba he seems to be absent from most of the internet all together (except for a handful of articles from 2010).
He’s homies with fellow Gagosian peer (Urs Fischer) and East-Sider gallery owner (Karma) Brendan Dugan…. But isn’t everyone???
Spencer Sweeney has been plucked from the LES environment of Gavin Brown’s Enterprise and placed in Gagosian’s more inconspicuous Upper East Side location named Park & 75 (that’s literally all it says on the door, see below)
The show consists of what Sweeney classically defined as ‘self portraits.’ But in his signature style you can leave the show and still have no idea what he looks like. But when has art ever been reality? Maybe we know what his soul looks like now and that’s all that matters.
Spencer Sweeney was born in Philadelphia but now lives in New York and is represented by Gavin Brown’s Enterprise

Gagosian is one of the more business-savy galleries, which is why they're a major player. With locations in Paris, London, Hong Kong, Athens....and many more places, they're a bonified global enterprise. Some of the most popular artists in their roster are Takahashi Murakami, Jeff Koons, and Jenny Saville.
So the fact they're showing an artist more regular to the lower east side circuit.... means Spencer Sweeney is having a pretty good day
