Damnation
Damnation - Ruby’s 5th exhibition at Sprueth and Magers (first in its LA location) is broken into two parts.
The first part is on the ground floor, and is a video installation surrounded by thick black curtains. The film explores “the artist’s ongoing investigations into the California prison system as both allegory and atrocity.”
In the upstairs gallery is a group of sculptures, aptly titled ‘Skulls.’ While at first glance these skulls may look like they belong to a human-sized chihuahua, they’re made from the armatures of Hollywood special effects creatures. Fitting since Ruby is based in Los Angeles, home to Hollywood.
These sculptures could very well be guardians to hell, waiting to greet those who enter.
